Nimba Mine to Ship Ore Again Before Mid 2009
Arcelor Mittal Has increased investments by 50% and are now investing more than USD 1.5 billion to reopen mining facilities in Liberia. The goal is to have the first iron ore shipment to leave port by mid 2009. Hospitals and Schools built and financed by LAMCO, are now being run by Arcelor Mittal. The houses which were built by LAMCO have partly been rehabilitated by Arcelor Mittal though most are overgrown by the rain-forest.

Fly Buchanan to Nimba in Google Earth
How fascinating isn't it to fly the globe using Google Earth? Put placemarks at Yekepa (7°34'13.74"N, 8°32'48.10"W) and Buchanan (5°52'58.17"N, 10° 2'37.09"W) to easily find them and discern them from the landscape. Then go to Buchanan (click the name in the places sidebar).
 
Turn on visibility of railroads, places and roads to find the LAMCO railroad as a solid black line.  Rotate the view making the railroad point upwards and center the pointer on the railroad.  Set eye altitude at some 2km and tilt the view to see the horizon at the top of the screen (maintain the altitude). You should see the railroad vanishing at the horizon. Possibly exaggerate mountains by 2-3 (tools->options).
 
Start to fly by quickly dragging the mouse (button down) a short distance--this should start scrolling the landscape when you release. The drag will control the speed, so try again until you acchieve a smooth scroll slow enough to see places.
 
Turn on other features to see photos (panoramicos) as blue dots to explore. See Peter Thejll's view from Area F in Yekepa.
 
You will be surprised bo learn that the landscape is rather flat with Mt Nimba towering at the horizon when you are nearing the end of the journey.
 
Using the tilt controls you can fly over and around Mt Nimba. View the panoramico showing the mine pit (what's left after digging out the ore).
 
You can alter the mouse behavior to better suit flight with tools-options. Have fun!
